The site dedicated to Brazilian women of African descent
Note from BW of Brazil: The invisibility of black models during Brazil’s top fashion shows and black actresses on the television major networks is an ongoing issue covered here on the blog. Women (and men) are excluded or largely under-represented in Brazil’s Eurocentric media and when they are featured they remain in highly stereotyped roles in which they basically live up to the “place” that Brazilian society has reserved for them. This is the case with the ongoing controversy surrounding the current Globo TV series Sexo e as negas and well as other attempts at “black shows” and it also applies to the exclusion of black models in the yearly São Paulo Fashion Week and Fashion Rio events. As such, it’s nice to see some Brazilian women finding success on the international market as are the cases of Gracie Carvalho and Lais Ribeiro.

At 24, Gracie has already done campaigns for brands such as DKNY, Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger, among others.
Another Brazilian that is part of the star team of Victoria’s Secret Angles is the Piauí native Lais Ribeiro.
