The site dedicated to Brazilian women of African descent
Note from BW of Brazil: Stories such as these are very painful to have to bring to the world. Among various topics that we regularly present here at BW of Brazil is the unfortunate fact that Brazil is a very violent country. The number of murders in the country are equal to that of a country at war and while this violence affects the entire population as a whole, black Brazilians, particularly young black males, are a large percentage of victims. Black women are also the majority of the female population that are the victims of homicide. The following story is simply horrific and one must ponder what would lead a person or persons to commit such an atrocity. Reports already show us the complications that black Brazilian women experience with pregnancy, often due to medical neglect or access to health care, which are the prime reasons that lead to maternal death. Today’s story appears to be due a heinous crime rather than medical negligence but does unfortunately affect another pregnant black woman. We will continue to follow this story as the details become available.

The body of a 21 year old was found in rural Ponte Nova, in the Zona da Mata in the state of Minas Gerais, on Tuesday (30). According to the Military Police (PM), she was nine months pregnant and had disappeared last week on the 26th. The corporation reported that the baby was not in the belly of the victim.
According to the Civil Police, the girl disappeared after leaving home for a consultation at the Hospital Nossa Senhora das Dores. A representative of the health unit said the woman had been there for a routine visit, was served and released. Security cameras recorded the arrival and exit of the victim from the building and according to police, she was alone.
On Tuesday, the fire department received a complaint and the body was found near a water tank in an abandoned laundromat, in a rural municipality. According to the PM, the young woman was gagged, her hands and feet tied up and had a cut in her belly. The child was not with her.
Military said nearby where the body was found there were a mattress, food waste and water bottles, raising the suspicion that she had been held captive since her disappearance. The PM said a search was made in the region’s hospitals to try to find the newborn baby.
In a profile on social networks that the young woman published on April 15, there were pictures of her baby shower. According to the Civil Police, the body was sent to the Instituto Médico Legal (IML or Medical Legal Institute), where the cause of death will be determined.

DNA testing will indicate if the child is the daughter of woman found dead. The body of Patricia Xavier, who was in the ninth month of pregnancy, was found with a cut in the belly

Police chief Silvério Rocha Aguiar confirmed at a news conference that a child has been found and that it will be submitted to a DNA test that will verify whether it is the son of Patrícia Xavier da Silva, 21. The Civil Police estimate that the results will come out in 30 days.
According to the corporation, the child was with a couple that is being investigated. The two said they were the parents of the child, but this version has not convinced the police. At the site where the body was located, researchers found groceries, indicating that Patrícia was under imprisonment. Police even discovered a third suspect through a receipt of purchases from the site. The researchers analyzed images of the supermarket security cameras and identified the man. The police chief ordered preventative imprisonment of the man.
The body of Patrícia, who was in the ninth month of pregnancy, was found on Tuesday in a former laundry in Bairro Vale Verde. Firefighters arrived at the scene after an anonymous tip. She had been missing for four days when left home to see a doctor in a city hospital.
In a statement, the Civil Police said the chief recognized the progress of the last few hours, but that the officer considers that the investigations still need to be deepened to clarify the alleged murder and the child’s disappearance. Representative of Hospital Nossa Senhora das Dores confirmed that the girl was at the unit last Friday, where she made a routine visit and released afterward.
