Note from BW of Brazil: And the success stories continue! The Black Women of Brazil blog was created to not only divulge news from the racial perspective in Brazil but also to highlight the place and accomplishments of black Brazilian women. We’ve seen a number of success stories that we’re proud to have presented to the English-speaking world since 2011 and today’s story will no doubt garner even more worldwide recognition. Our little blog already shows the world that the story of black Brazilian women should be recognized in not only the African Diaspora, but in the world as a whole. And due to the recent recognition of a globally-recognized economic magazine, millions of people around the world will become familiar with the name and work of Maria Aparecida da Silva ‘Cida’ Bento, executive director of the NGO CEERT.

The stated objective of CEERT is “to guarantee the rights of the black population to support the struggle to end the ethnic-racial inequalities and existing prejudice. CEERT develops projects that seek to facilitate the black population having equal access to justice and work. The initiative for the project came from three people, Hédio Silva Jr, Ivair Augusto Alves dos Santos and Cida.” (Source) Cida’s name has appeared here at BW of Brazil in past material (here, here, here and here for example) and as her work and books have focused on racial inequality, racism and whiteness, three regular topics on this blog, it is clearly understandable why we celebrate this honor with her today.

Cida Bento, executive director of CEERT (Centro de Estudos das Relações de Trabalho e Desigualdades – CEERT or Center of Studies of Labor Relations and Inequalities) and columnist for Portal Áfricas, has been listed by The Economist magazine as one of the 50 most influential professionals in the world in the field of diversity. Cida is someone who seeks to create models of diversity in the area of ​​human resources that can be used by companies looking for a more just and equitable society.

The list was prepared by The Economist and was released by its offices in London and New York on October 31st. This is the first time that professionals related to diversity have been listed. In addition to Cida, another Brazilian who figures onto the list is Congressman Jean Wyllys. Angelina Jolie, Hillary Clinton and Bill Gates are other personalities identified by The Economist. Cida Bento has worked in the field of diversity in human resources for almost 30 years and has written books on the subject since the 90s and since then has been developing works in companies in Brazil.

The list was ratified by an independent panel of experts, and Mark Palmer-Edgecumbe, leadership of the Global Diversity List and former head of diversity and inclusion at Google, points out that the list publicly recognizes the most influential variety of professionals who create innovative solutions and prepare models for professional diversity of tomorrow.
