Through her Instagram profile, Samba/MPB singer Alcione heaped praises on rising star Iza
Well, for some time now, we’ve followed and reported on the emergence of a rising star in singer Iza. Having attracted attention in a manner that is very common these days, on YouTube, once signing a recording deal, the girl has been making big moves. For fans who have followed her since she started out covering tunes by international artists such as Beyoncé, Rhianna, Amy Winehouse and Prince, her talent came as no surprise. But perhaps a crowning achievement and sealing signal that her star is shining as bright as more established artists is a compliment she recently recently from Samba/MPB (Brazilian Popular Music) singer Alcione.
The artist from São Luís, Maranhão known as “A Marrom”, meaning “the brown one” has been one of Brazil’s most beloved singers since her emergence on the musical scene with her debut album in 1975. In a career that has seen her rack up 19 gold albums, five platinum and one double platinum, Alcione has performed in numerous countries around the world, earned a Latin Grammy Award and has a string of hit songs that any fan of Brazilian music knows by heart. So one can imagine the honor it must be for a newer artist to receive such a compliment from a living legend. Recently, Alcione took to her Instagram account to send a message to Iza.
“For a long time I’ve been waiting in Brazilian music for an event that left me perplexed and fulfilled all the qualities an artist needs,” her post started out.
The singer, whose professional career has spanned more than four decades, went on to list a number of important personalities in Brazilian history, in areas such as sports, music and acting. Those names included the rei de futebol (soccer king) Pelé, singer/musicians Clara Nunes, Lenine, Elza Soares, Chico Buarque, Roberto Carlos and Maria Bethânia, actor/diretor Marco Nanini, actors Matheus Nachtergaele, Fernanda Montenegro, Grande Otelo and humorista/actor Chico Anysio.
The singer then continued:
“And, suddenly … Iza! Besides singing a lot, you didn’t even need to be beautiful … but you are! You’re an occurrence that dances, sings beautifully. I’m very happy to talk about Iza and for Iza. We, o povo brasileiro (the Brazilian people), deserve the artist that you are,” she continued, before sealing her complimentary words: “Your fan, Alcione.”
After learning of the homage, Iza responded to the kind words saying, “I’m too excited, queen!!! What an honor!” Not surprisingly, after receiving such high praises from one of Brazil’s most respected artists, Iza naturally shared Alcione’s post on her own social network profile.
“Such gratitude. I don’t even know what to say. The first time I was at her side, I thought I was not going to be able to sing as nervous as I was sharing the stage with this anthem of a woman. Thank you for all your affection and generosity, Queen,” she wrote.

“I have been waiting for a long time in Brazilian music, for an event that left me perplexed and filled all the qualities an artist needs. For those who have seen Pelé play, listened to Clara Nunes, listened to Lenine, watched (the film) O Auto da Compadecida with Marco Nanine and Matheus Nachtergaele, listened to Elza Soares, (the song) As Rosas Não Falam” by Cartola, saw the (samba school) Mangueira (Carnaval) championship in 1984, saw Pope Francisco in Brazil, Chico Anysio, Grande Otelo, Fernanda Montenegro, vibrated with the Pentacampeonato (fifth World Cup championship) of Brazil … I sang with Roberto Carlos, Maria Bethânia, Chico Buarque and many others. I’ve seen Jerusalem, walked the Via Dolorosa. I’ve performed in more than 30 countries. I was thrilled with the toadas (ballads) of João Carlos, Humberto and Chagas … Ê boi! And suddenly … IZA! @iza Iza, besides singing a lot, you don’t even have to be beautiful … But you are! You are an occurrence that dances, sings beautifully. I am very happy to talk about Iza and for Iza. We Brazilian people deserve the artist that you are. May God always protect you! May the angels of light always be with you, the Orixás protect you and your whole journey be of success, peace, harmony and health! Tua fâ (Your fan)” (Alcione)
