Note from BW of Brazil: Carnaval parade themes have always been intriguing, but the some of the themes I’ve seen in the past few years have made me wish I could have been there to witness them live. Costumes, themes and banners featured in the parade of São Paulo’s Vai-Vai samba school presented the ongoing struggle of Brazil’s black population, the rising prison population, the black panther, which was a huge event for black Brazilians last year and also marched in memory of last year’s biggest and most tragic story, the murder of Rio councilwoman Marielle Franco. But the pictures are often as striking as words, so check them out below.

In its parade at Carnival 2019, the Vai-Vai samba school exalted blackness and honored the city councilwoman Marielle Franco in the early hours of Sunday (3). With the samba theme entitled O quilombo do futuro (The quilombo of the future), the school dealt with the racism and the struggle of the blacks throughout history.

“The samba talked a lot about Marielle and about what she meant for us while she lived and now with the legacy she left behind. I’m still in a trance,” Anielle said in an interview with the G1.

The agriculture and metallurgy of the African continent was also featured in the Vai-Vai parade.

The PSOL councilor was murdered in Rio de Janeiro in March last year. Investigations into her execution have not yet been completed.

Vai-Vai was the fourth school to perform at the São Paulo parade. The school paraded with photos of the councilwoman and a plaque of “Marielle present!” in the “I have a dream” wing.

The school’s bateria (drum troupe) were dressed as a Black Panther. In the front committee it showed biblical characters interpreted by blacks.
