“I don’t mix with blacks because I was well-raised”: University student refuses to accept class material from professor because she is black

Note from BW of Brazil: So, what do we have here? Another incident of clear racial bias in the land in which it’s not supposed to exist, as everyone knows, in Brazil, “we are all equal”. After reading today’s story, I was reminded of another story that a friend of mine shared last month. She’s an American originally from the mountain region of the US. Living in Brazil, she’s married to a Brazilian and lives in the ABC region of the São Paulo.

After arriving to live in Brazil, like most Americans, she did a stint teaching English. Hired to teach elementary school children in an expensive private school in the ABC region, she once revealed to me how students, almost all white, treated the black teachers at that particular school. “You’re black and my father says I don’t have to listen to what you say”, was a comment from one of the students that stuck out in her mind. In general, she noticed in that school, as with so many companies throughout Brazil, the cleaning and service staff at that school was almost exclusively black. Although there were black teachers, most were white.

Besides the specific comment that the one student made, she also noted how students generally treated black employees at the school as if they were beneath them and didn’t even deserve to be spoken to or treated in a respectful manner. It’s not a joke and as Brazil’s history is loaded with these sorts of attitudes and incidents, we’re far beyond dismissing these incidents as isolated incidents. And again, I have to wonder if this guy is a supporter of controversial President Jair Bolsonaro, whose rhetoric seems to have unleashed a bolder, more openly admitted racist than previous years (see here, here and here). I mean, the guy in today’s story said something pretty similar to something Bolsonaro himself said

With this in mind, ask yourself this question. How do people continue to spread the idea that in Brazil, “we are all equal” when incidents such as the one below clearly show that people don’t believe this? And sooner or later, how they really feel will come out.

Danilo Araújo de Góis, a Social Sciences student at the Federal University of Recôncavo Baiano, allegedly committed several acts of racism, according to students, claiming that “he does not mix with blacks because he was well raised”.

In a video published on social networks, a student from the Federal University of Recôncavo Baiano (UFR), identified as Danilo Araujo de Góis, refused to receive a document from a professor of the institution because she is black.

In the images, the student makes it clear that he will not receive the document from the teacher, while the students shout “racist”.

The images were released by the Twitter profile Lista Preta (Black List) and shows Danilo, in the middle of a room full of black students, refusing to receive a document from the professor.

Students report that since entering the University in 2018, the social science student refuses to take things from black people and that black people have been cautious even sitting next to him. He goes so far as to say that “he doesn’t mix with blacks because he was well raised”.

The coordinator of the University’s History course was called and expelled the student from the classroom, calling the other students to be available as witnesses.

Other students, from the same class, confirm a history of racist acts on the part of Danilo, who was invited to leave.

Youtuber Felipe Neto denounced the act: “Share this because so this piece of manure receives the treatment he deserves.  The worm refuses to touch black people or objects that black people have touched.  What hatred, my God.”

  1. I think that he was quite happy to be thrown out of the class. It is that time in Brésil when people are happy to show their racism. They have a president who is not ashamed of it.
In a situation like; in which one is not being violent, he should be let to finish his class, and unwillingly learn from his Afro-Brazilian classmates.
